What’s in a Name?

For any growing organization with multiple buildings on campus, naming a new residence is essential. A thoughtful name helps people locate, recognize, and ultimately enjoy the space. In February 2025, as Hopehill prepared to open its latest affordable residence for low-income seniors, we faced this very challenge. With beloved names like Aspen Green, The Cedars, and The Beechwood already in place—and another building known as The Bentall Building—we decided to continue our tradition of tree-inspired names.

We’re proud to announce that our newest building will be called Dogwood Residence. The Dogwood tree is a cherished emblem of British Columbia, renowned for its beauty, strength, and durability. Historically, the First Nations of BC valued the Dogwood tree in many ways: its wood was fashioned into arrows and stakes, its bark was essential for tanning and drying hides, and its roots were used for healing. With a lifespan of nearly 80 years, the Dogwood symbolizes resilience and enduring support—values that mirror our commitment to our residents.

Dogwood Residence will be home to 64 low-income seniors, with rents based on each resident’s ability to pay. At Hopehill, our mission is to provide safe, affordable housing that empowers our community.

We’re excited to welcome you to Dogwood Residence—a new home where tradition meets strength and community thrives.
