Affordable housing for seniors has never been more important.

The tough reality is that British Columbia has become unaffordable for many seniors. Skyrocketing rents and dwindling affordable-housing units are driving seniors to the brink of homelessness, forcing some to couch surf, seek roommates or even live in cars2. With your help, we can make a difference in hundreds of seniors’ lives through affordable-housing and a caring community.

Hopehill believes that seniors are a valuable part of our community and that we have a responsibility to care for and respect for each one. To meet Vancouver’s desperate need for more senior’s housing, we are working to build 128 new affordable living units over the next 5 years.

Growing to meet the needs of our community

For over 65 years, Hopehill has focused on growing our services and support to match the needs of the Vancouver community. Starting with eight war-time duplexes purchased from the proceeds of a Mother’s Day flower sale in 1947, Hopehill has grown to encompass five major residences across three city blocks.

Today, we are at capacity, with a waiting list of almost 3 years – time that many seniors don’t have. To meet the needs of our community, Hopehill needs to grow by replacing our aging facilities with much-needed new homes and increased services.

Give seniors more than just a place to call home.

The rising cost of living has placed many seniors in a difficult situation, often having to choose between paying rent or buying food each month. Hopehill offers seniors a life-line, by ensuring they have access to affordable housing and a supportive community that lets them thrive.

“It is more blessed to give than it is to receive.”

Thank you for taking a few moments to consider joining as a partner in support of the growth and legacy of Hopehill. We truly believe that each partnership opportunity, no matter the size, will make a lasting difference for generations to come. We invite you to join us in being part of this legacy.

An invitation from our CEO, Jamey McDonald.

When my wife and I (and our 3 young children) were in seminary preparing for pastoral ministry, we lived on $50 of cash weekly. $35 went to groceries. $5 went to McDonald’s on Friday nights (entertainment for 5 folks!). $5 went into our gas tank. And on Sundays, $5 went into the offering plate.  I know God didn’t need my $5, and it was small in comparison to what others would/could do, but when I gave, a rush of pleasure came to me because I realized “it is more blessed to give than it is to receive”.

Now more than 40 years later, I still get a thrill when I give. The numbers have changed but the results are the same. Perhaps you already know that? It’s not just true for me, it’s true for every one of us. When we give, we are in a very blessed spot.

Could I encourage you to think about contributing to our campaign to raise funds for affordable housing for seniors in Vancouver?  Most of the folks we deal with live on less than $30k per year. We rent them safe, clean, warm, studio or one-bedroom units for about 30% of their monthly income.

Beyond an affordable place to live, they experience the love of Jesus through staff, neighbours, and our chaplains.  For some, it’s their first encounter with people that care deeply for them, and for some, it is eternity-changing.

Over the next 5 years, we hope to build 2 buildings to bring 128 additional affordable units to Vancouver. If you’d like to meet to talk about how your gift can help us do that, give me a call. My personal number is 604-255-7707 ext 106. My email is [email protected]. Our total need is $5.2 million, which is huge, but our God is huger than our needs. Thank you!

Sincerely,
